The Turkish Party proposes to make the "Bozkurt" gesture a national symbol

July 8, 2024

A scandal erupted in Turkey after the disqualification of footballer Merih Demiral, which prompted the opposition "Good Party" (İyi parti) to propose recognition of the gesture "Bozkurt", in which the fingers imitate the shape of the wolf’s head,  national symbol. According to T24, the party submitted a bill to the Parliament. On 2 July, Turkey defeated Austria 2-1 in the 1/8 Euro 2024 final. Both goals scored by the Turkish national team Merih Demiral, and the second ball he marked with a gesture of "grey wolves", which in Turkey symbolizes national pride and is often used by supporters of ultra-right movements. UEFA disqualified Demiral for two matches for demonstrating a gesture, which caused deep disappointment among Turkish citizens and regret from the Turkish Foreign Ministry. "Good Party" MP Adnan Shefik Chirkin proposed a bill to recognize the "Bozkurt" gesture as an official symbol of the Turks. He noted that this step would help to avoid misunderstandings abroad and stressed the need to recognize the sign as part of Turkish culture.
