Turkey considers joining BRICS

June 6, 2024

Hakan Fidan said during a visit to China that Turkey is considering joining BRICS. The Foreign Minister described the organization as a "good alternative to the EU". Stating that Turkey, which has a Customs Union agreement with the EU, continues to seek new opportunities for cooperation with various partners on various platforms, Fidan said that he will participate in the BRICS meeting to be held in Russia next week on June 10 and 11. He added that Turkey supported cooperation and multilateralism in both Africa and Asia.

BRICS was founded in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India and China. South Africa joined in 2010. In January 2024, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) joined the BRICS. Saudi Arabia did not join the organization in early 2024 as planned, but announced that it was still considering joining.
