In Turkey, fines of 61 million liras have been imposed on companies that inflate product prices

The Ministry of Commerce reported that the Unfair Price Assessment Board fined enterprises that inflate prices and accumulate stocks in the amount of more than 61 million liras.

At the meeting of the Board for the Assessment of Unfair Prices, held on May 2, 2024, issues were put on the agenda about an exorbitant increase in prices for basic foodstuffs and basic necessities in the markets, the accumulation of stocks in warehouses in the automotive sector, an exorbitant increase in prices for finished concrete and cement products and enterprises that overestimate the price of bread. A total of 61 million 66 thousand 431 lira of administrative fines were imposed on enterprises caught in excessive price increases and accumulation of stocks.

"As the Ministry of Commerce, we will resolutely continue to apply the necessary administrative measures against actions that negatively affect consumers by disrupting price behavior in the markets. Administrative measures will continue to be applied," representatives of the regulator said.

​​​​​​​In total, in 2023, an administrative fine in the amount of 355 million 804 thousand 957 liras was imposed on enterprises convicted of excessive price increases and accumulation of stocks.

In Alanya, the restaurant was fined and sealed for deceiving tourists

Alanya police sealed the restaurant for 5 days and issued a fine of 32,900 lira ($1,020) to the restaurant owner in connection with a complaint from tourists about inflated prices. Police officers received a complaint from four British tourists who visited the restaurant. The tourists said they were asked to pay 50.300 lira ($1,558) for dinner, which included 25 cocktails, 3 tomato soups, 2 dens, 2 waters and 1 mushroom snack. The tourists did not agree with the bill issued to them, however, the restaurant staff began to threaten them and forced them to pay the bill. After the tourists contacted the police station, an inspection was carried out at the restaurant. According to the results of the inspection, the restaurant was sealed for 5 days, and the owner was obliged to pay a fine. The mayor of Alanya Osman Taryk Ozchelik commented on the incident: "The staff of the Alanya Municipality carefully checks every notification and complaint. We will continue to work to ensure the material and moral safety of all our guests living in our city and coming on vacation."

The nesting period of the sea turtles "caretta caretta" and "chelonia mydas", which are on the list of endangered species of the World Conservation Union (IUCN), has begun on the Mediterranean coast. In this regard, the entrance to the beaches where these turtles nest was prohibited from 20.00 to 08.00 in the morning. Sea turtles will be able to use these beaches to lay eggs at night, and humans during the day. It is also forbidden to build bonfires, cook barbecues, set up tents and use any vehicles on these beaches. The administrative fine to be imposed on violators of the ban in force until the end of September is 387.141 liras. In total, there are 20 beaches in Turkey for nesting sea turtles, 9 of which are located in the provinces of Antalya, Mugla, Mersin, Adana and Hatay. On all these beaches, which are under the jurisdiction of the General Directorate for the Protection of Nature and National Parks (DKMP) and the General Directorate for the Protection of Natural Resources, it is forbidden to appear on the beach at night from May to September. As a rule, surveillance cameras are installed on such beaches and volunteers work to help newly hatched turtles get to the sea.
