Pregnancy and childbirth in Turkey

Pregnancy and childbirth in Turkey

January 27, 2023

Pregnancy and childbirth are an important period in a woman's life. How many experiences and other different emotions have to be experienced at this time. Expectant moms worry about literally everything in the world. Double stress if they are in a foreign country at this time. We hurry to calm them down - it's not worth worrying. Turkey has an excellent healthcare system, it's just worth knowing about its features and then the moment of the baby's birth will be happy and joyful.
To begin with, there are no special maternity hospitals in the country. Every major hospital, whether public or private, has a maternity ward with all the necessary equipment and comfortable wards. During pregnancy, a woman chooses a suitable clinic and doctor, and goes there on the day of delivery. The only thing that should be clarified in advance is the presence of a neonatology department and a pediatric intensive care unit, since they are not available in all hospitals.
Otherwise, everything goes the same as in other countries. Pregnant women periodically visit their doctor for examination, tests and ultrasound. By the way, blood tests are not taken here as often as in clinics in the post-Soviet space. At each appointment, an ultrasound is done, and blood is given only in the direction of the doctor.
On the day of delivery, you do not need to collect a huge package of things with you. Usually they take with them only clothes for a newborn and a phone with charging. Firstly, hospitals give out everything you need, and secondly, it is not customary to stay in the postpartum ward for a long time. Just like in most European countries, after a natural birth in Turkey, a woman is sent home the next day, and after a caesarean – 2-3 days later.
Prices. The costs of pregnancy and childbirth vary depending on the clinic and the insurance that the woman in labor has. Turkish citizens who have a state insurance policy can come to a state hospital, where childbirth is accepted free of charge. In all other cases, the price will be from 5000 Turkish lira and above. It is difficult to name the upper limit of the cost, since the clinics, the set of services they provide, and the conditions of insurance companies are very different from each other.
We wish all future moms an easy pregnancy, and their wonderful babies good health.

The will in Turkey: important information for foreigners

If a foreigner wants to leave a will in Turkey, it is important to consider that it must comply with Turkish inheritance law. Turkish law provides for a guaranteed share (saklı pay) for certain categories of heirs, regardless of the contents of the will. Such heirs include children, spouses and parents. Legal heirs not mentioned in the will may apply to the court for their share of the inheritance. Brothers and sisters are not entitled to a guaranteed share. If there are no children and parents: - 3/4 of the estate is received by the spouse- 1/4 is divided between the grandmother and grandfather of the deceased and their children (uncle, aunt) 4.
