Small baby turtles have started to hatch in Mersin in the Erdemli Beach area under the control of METU Marine Science Institute. More than 2500 baby turtles took their first steps into the sea. The process was closely monitored by student volunteers working at METU's Center for Applied Research on Climate Change and Sustainable Development.
"We do research on turtle monitoring and protection because climate change also affects sea turtles. Last year, 1,015 babies went to sea, and this season, thanks to the increase in the number of nests to 41, more than 2,500 turtles will hatch from the eggs," said Dr. Evrim Kalkan Tezcan, a researcher at the center.
