A farmer in Mersin has harvested his first crop of pitahayas

July 18, 2023

Farmer Feza O., who lives in Silifke district, proudly shared the news of harvesting the first crop of pitahaya on his plot. Pitahaya, popularly known as "dragon fruit," is very popular among tourists who buy this exotic fruit at local markets.

"We produce in a 3-hectare greenhouse. With about 5,000 seedlings initially, we expect to harvest 10,000 fruits. I am sure that this figure will grow over the years. The Mediterranean climate is the most beautiful climate in the world and contributes to excellent yields," commented the Merci farmer on his success.

The taste of the "dragon fruit" is compared to that of kiwi, pear or watermelon, and the texture of the pulp to fresh figs. The fruit is rich in fiber, vitamins (vitamin C, betalains, beta-carotene, lycopene) and minerals, especially magnesium and iron.
