Foreigners staying illegally in Turkey, since July 1 will not be able to marry in the country

The Directorate-General for Population and Citizenship of the Ministry of the Interior has sent instructions to the Marriage Registration Offices concerning the procedure for contracting marriage with foreign nationals. In order to prevent persons entering into marriage from acquiring Turkish citizenship, the right to stay had been made compulsory.

"In order to ensure public order and effectively combat illegal migration, in the event of a marriage between a Turk and a foreigner or two foreigners, if the foreigner has the legal right to stay in our country with a valid passport or a document replacing the passport, The application for marriage is accepted, and the situation is reported in all marriage registers in your province," the report said.

The Ordinance comes into force on 1 July 2024.
