New security rules for foreigners who wish to acquire citizenship of the Republic of Turkey have entered into force. Under the new rules, foreigners will be granted citizenship only after approval by the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) and Interpol vetting. Ibrahim Tashpan, the Director-General for Population and Citizenship Affairs, announced this new status in his speech to the Commission on Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Grand National Assembly.
According to the new rules, foreigners who will receive a Turkish identity card must pass the vetting process conducted by the National Police of Turkey, The National Intelligence Organization. If these tests do not produce a positive result, the application for citizenship will be rejected.
In the process of obtaining citizenship, two-stage verification at Interpol has also become mandatory. The Interpol audit will be conducted during the application stage and shortly before it is completed. This measure is aimed at preventing the acquisition of Turkish citizenship by members of international organized crime organizations.
