The Turkish President spoke at the opening ceremony of the second GDP at the airport. Sabihi Gokcen.
"With the commissioning of this new runway, we will significantly increase the airport's capacity. The new runway will be used for landings, the old one for takeoffs. Our goal is to increase passenger traffic to 85 million passengers per year. We predict that this year the airport will serve 37 million people, and in the future it will become the third busiest after Istanbul and Antalya airports. $970 million was spent on the construction of the second lane," Recep Tayyip Erdogan said

"In 21 years, we have increased the number of operating airports from 26 to 57, and the capacity from 55 million passengers to 337 million per year. The number of destinations where our planes fly has increased to 343 in 130 countries. Turkey has become one of the countries with the largest network of flights," the president said.

He also said that the opening of the Chukurov airport in Mersin will take place in January 2024.
