April 2, 2024

The head of the Supreme Election Commission of the Central Election Commission of Turkey, Ahmet Ener, reported on the successful holding of municipal elections in the country. With the exception of isolated incidents, the situation at the polling stations was calm. According to the CEC, 61.4 million voters took part in the voting.

If anyone doubted that Turkey is a democratic country, yesterday's elections definitely dispelled all doubts. According to the results of the elections, the ruling AKP party (Justice and Development Party) could not hold the leadership and lost to the opposition SNR party (Republican People's Party).

In percentage terms, the election results are as follows:
SNR (Republican People's Party) - 37.74%
AKP (Justice and Development Party) - 35.49%
YRP (New Welfare Party) - 6.19%
DEM (People's Equality and Democracy Party) - 5.68%
MNR (Nationalist Movement Party) - 4.98%

Of course, the closest attention was focused on the mayoral elections in Istanbul, Izmir and Ankara. In all three megacities, the candidates from the SNR (Republican People's Party) won:

Istanbul - Ekrem Imamoglu - 51.09%
Ankara - Mansur Yavash - 60.35%
Izmir - Jamil Tugai - 48.90%

In Antalya and Mersin, the current mayors, who are also candidates from the SNR party, remained in their posts, having managed to gain the necessary number of votes:

Antalya - Mukhittin Bejek - 48.64%
Mersin - Vakhap Secher - 59.50%
