The nesting period of the sea turtles "caretta caretta" and "chelonia mydas", which are on the list of endangered species of the World Conservation Union (IUCN), has begun on the Mediterranean coast. In this regard, the entrance to the beaches where these turtles nest was prohibited from 20.00 to 08.00 in the morning. Sea turtles will be able to use these beaches to lay eggs at night, and humans during the day. It is also forbidden to build bonfires, cook barbecues, set up tents and use any vehicles on these beaches. The administrative fine to be imposed on violators of the ban in force until the end of September is 387.141 liras.
In total, there are 20 beaches in Turkey for nesting sea turtles, 9 of which are located in the provinces of Antalya, Mugla, Mersin, Adana and Hatay. On all these beaches, which are under the jurisdiction of the General Directorate for the Protection of Nature and National Parks (DKMP) and the General Directorate for the Protection of Natural Resources, it is forbidden to appear on the beach at night from May to September. As a rule, surveillance cameras are installed on such beaches and volunteers work to help newly hatched turtles get to the sea.
