Tourists in Turkey abandon hotels in favor of renting apartments

August 21, 2023

The Tucria Institute of Statistics (TUİK) reports that in 2023, tourists have changed from traditional hotel vacations to renting apartments. According to the data, 60.2% of overnight stays were in rented apartments, while the share of hotel nights fell to 35.6% (a drop of 6.6 million). The statistics clearly show that travelers are more likely to choose to stay in their own apartments or rented apartments.

Turkish hoteliers perceive this trend with a certain alarm. Hotel chains are actively looking for ways to reduce the cost of accommodation and are developing new marketing strategies in an effort to win back their guests. At the same time, state authorities plan to conduct regular inspections to identify those who rent accommodation illegally, avoiding the payment of taxes to the Turkish treasury.
