Turkey, with its rich culture and unique traditions, is also known for its special attitude towards cats. Cats play an important role in Turkish society and their presence can be seen everywhere - on the streets, in yards and even in mosques. Cats are an integral part of the urban landscape in Turkey. The large number of cats on the streets sometimes surprises tourists. Turks themselves perceive cats as a symbol of good luck and happiness. It is believed that they have magical powers and are able to cross the boundaries between the world of people and the world of spirits. To offend a cat here is considered a great sin.
In many cities of Turkey there are special houses for cats, called "cat houses" or "cat cafes". Here they are given cozy shelter, care and medical attention. People can come to these places to enjoy the company of these beautiful animals, feed them or just play.
Turkey is also home to a very special breed of cat, the Van cat. The breed is considered a national treasure of the country and is forbidden to be exported outside its borders. Van Kedisi have semi-long-haired white fur and often have different eye colors: one eye is blue, the other is amber or copper-colored. Genetic research data has shown that the Van Kedisi is one of the oldest breeds of domestic cats. Van cat is considered a symbol of abundance and good luck. Their appearance in the house is an auspicious sign, symbolizing a happy future for the family.
