The joint military maneuvers conducted by Turkey and the United States were the largest in the last seven years. The exercise involved warships as well as F-16 fighter jets on the Turkish side and F-18 fighter jets on the U.S. side. The head of Turkey's combat drone manufacturer, Selcuk Bayraktar, aka the Turkish president's son-in-law, visited the USS Gerald Ford aircraft carrier, which docked at the port of Antalya.
The military exercises and the arrival of the U.S. delegation to Turkey clearly indicate the desire of both sides to restore ties that have long been held back. Another important step in this direction will be the upcoming meeting between Turkish President Erdogan and U.S. leader Joe Biden on the margins of the G-20 summit in New Delhi from September 9-10. This meeting will follow their previous meeting at the NATO summit in Lithuania last month.
