Turkey and the TRNC: Supplying Power through a Submarine Cable

Turkey and the TRNC: Supplying Power through a Submarine Cable

July 3, 2023

Professor Murat Fahrioglu of the Department of Electrical and Electronics at Middle East Technical University talked about his involvement in a project to supply electricity from Turkey to Northern Cyprus through a submarine cable. Professor Murat Fahrioglu is the coordinator of the engineering program and a member of the Joint Working Group on Energy established by Turkey and TRNC. He reported on the work done and future plans.

According to Fahrioglu, the research led to the selection of the HVDC-VCS model as the best option to connect electricity between the two countries. After selecting the model, TTürkiye Elektrik İletim AŞ and the TRNC Electricity Department started working on the connection details. The connection project is technically prepared and ready for implementation.  Now the team is considering three routes with a total length of about 85 km, located close to each other. They are also working on various cable capacity scenarios to ensure efficient transmission of electricity between Turkey and TRNC .

Supplying electricity through a submarine cable has several advantages. First, it is a cleaner and more efficient way to transmit energy. Second, submarine cables provide stability and reliability of electricity transmission, which is especially important for countries that seek to strengthen energy security.
