According to the Turkish Statistical Institute’s "World Population Day 2024", the date 11 July 1987 (when the world population reached 5 billion) was adopted by the United Nations Development Programme (UN) in 1989 as "World Population Day".
Each year on this special day, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) identifies a theme that addresses important population-related issues and undertakes awareness-raising activities.
According to UN demographic estimates, the country with the largest population in 2023 was India with 1 billion. 428 million. 627 thousand. 663 people, followed by China with 1 billion. 425 million. 671 thousand. 352 people and the USA with 339 million. 996 thousand. 563 people. These three countries account for 39.7 per cent of the world’s population.
With a population of 85,372,377, Turkey ranks 18th out of 194 countries and, in addition, exceeds the European average of children and youth. Turkey has a population of 1.1% of the world’s population.
