The medlar harvest is underway in Mersin

April 30, 2024

Maltese plum, medlar, "yellow gold", loquat, yeni dünya (new world) - all this is the name of the same fruit, which is a symbol of spring in Mersin and Antalya. Medlar and mulberry are the earliest delicacies that yield a harvest in spring. The taste of the medlar resembles a mix of apricot and plum.

In Mersin, where the air temperature has risen above seasonal norms, the medlar has ripened earlier than usual and the harvest is already in full swing in the Erdemli area. Farmers classify fruits according to their quality and send them to the domestic market in Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir, Bursa, Konya and for export. Fruits of the first grade cost 40-45 liras, of the second grade - 25-30 liras, of the third grade - 10-15 liras.

Useful properties
Medlar contains vitamins A, C, PP, E, K, potassium, sodium, iodine, copper, calcium, selenium and pectin, and is an excellent antioxidant due to its carotenoid content. Caloric content: 50-70 kcal per 100 g. Medlar boosts immunity, is useful for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, and has an anti-inflammatory effect. In case of a cold, medlar will help to remove phlegm and reduce sore throat. Medlar leaf and seed extract reduces blood glucose levels in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus and lowers insulin resistance. Contraindications - individual intolerance.
