Lemur and hyena cubs born in Mersin Nature Park

June 29, 2024

The Tarsus Nature Park, managed by the Department of Agricultural Services of the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality, has been expanded with three new pets. Denise and Yildiz are Lemur cubs, and Toprak (land), named for his dark coloring, is a baby spotted hyena.

The biologist Yilmaz Olmez, working in the Tarsus Nature Park, gave the following information about the condition of animals: "Lemur babies are cared for and fed by their mothers.   They have no health problems. We feed their mothers products such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, dried figs to prevent any health problems. Lemurs are very social primates that can live in groups of 30. In nature, they can live for 19-20 years and weigh 2-3 kilograms. Because hyenas are a matriarchal community, we currently keep the young separate from the pack to prevent competition between the females. When the baby reaches a certain level of competence, we will reunite it with the pack".
