Excavations have begun in the Tarsus district of Mersin, where a tomb believed to date back to the Roman period has been discovered. It was found during the excavation of the foundation of the office building of the district police headquarters in 1993 in the Duatepe neighborhood. The work is being carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Directorate of the Tarsus Museum. A 6-member team under the scientific supervision of Deniz Kaplan, Associate Professor of the Department of Archaeology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Mersin University, is taking part in the excavations. He noted that the history of Tarsus is thousands of years old and still hides many mysteries and said that the excavation works will last about 3 months.
