Due to the approaching deadline for paying rent tax, the Ministry of Finance has resorted to a new method of identifying those who do not pay rent tax. With the records of the land registry at its disposal, the Ministry of Finance obtained the residential addresses of landlords and compared the data for about 5 million apartments. It turned out that about 1.4 million rented apartments had not been taxed. It is assumed that 400 thousand of these apartments are not taxed, since children or parents of homeowners live in them, and 1 million homeowners intentionally do not pay tax. For this reason, the financial service visits these apartments and finds out the amount of rent. Violators will have to pay the following fees:
- the unpaid tax itself
- penalty for double tax loss
- penalty for non-payment of tax on time in the amount of 3.5 % per month
- penalty for failure to submit a declaration.
Also, violators lose the right to a tax-free amount of 21 thousand liras.
At the same time, the Tax Administration called on citizens to fill out a rent declaration through the Digital Tax Administration and began sending messages to landlords:
"Dear taxpayer,
According to our Presidium, it has been established that you have received income from renting out housing, which is subject to income tax in 2023. Income tax returns for 2023 will be submitted between March 1 and April 1, 2024. You can file an annual income statement for rental housing through the Digital Tax Office (digital.gib.gov.tr ) or a System of ready-made declarations (hazirbeyan.gib.gov.tr )."
Income tax rates for 2023:
Income from 70,000 liras
Income from 70,000 liras to 150,000 liras - minimum - 10,500 liras, for the remainder - 20%
Income from 150,000 liras to 370.000 liras - minimum - 26,500 liras, for the remainder - 27%
Income from 370.000 liras to 1,900,000 liras - minimum - 85.900 liras, for the remainder - 35%
Income from 1,900,000 liras - minimum - 621,400 liras, for the remainder - 40%
