According to the laws of Turkey, a marriage must be concluded or recognized by the competent authorized authorities of Turkey. The religious ceremony of marriage (nikah) has no legal effect.
Marriages contracted by foreigners with Turkish citizens are considered valid in the following cases:
- The marriage was concluded on the territory of Turkey
- The marriage was concluded in a Turkish consulate abroad.
In Turkey, marriages between foreign citizens and Turkish citizens are registered "Evlendirme Dairesi" by civil registry offices. Documents for foreign citizens:
- Birth certificate with apostille (notarized translation into Turkish)
- Certificate of marital status with apostille (notarized translation into Turkish)
- Original and a copy of the passport
- Original and copy of residence permit (if available)
- Photos
- Health certificate, which among other things indicates the presence/absence of serious diseases (HIV, hepatitis, etc.).
- Document confirming the place of residence. If the partners do not reside in Turkey it is possible to provide a written confirmation from the hotel, which indicates the dates and duration of stay.
- Application for marriage (if a woman wants to keep her maiden name after marriage, it should be indicated in the application).
Important! In the presence of all the above documents, the civil registry office is obliged to conclude an official marriage and is not entitled to require a residence permit.
If the marriage is concluded abroad, it must be legalized in Turkey. For this purpose, all the documents listed below must be translated into Turkish, notarized and submitted to the local civil registry office (nüfus müdürlüğü) or Turkish consulate:
-Marriage registration certificate with apostille
- Birth certificate with apostille (for a foreign citizen)
- Passport (for a foreign citizen)
- Identity card (for a foreign citizen).
The deadline for notification of a marriage contracted abroad is one month. If the deadline is missed, you will have to pay a fine for late notification of the marriage.
