Umut Can Gümüş, who lives in a rural area in the Ergani district of Dyarbakır, found a meteorite fragment that was seen by eyewitnesses in many cities in eastern and southeastern Turkey on Sept. 2.
Umut searched for the rock for about 4 hours with his phone flashlight and eventually found the half-kilogram meteorite fragment in his field. According to Gümüş, when he saw the rock, it was hot to the touch, so Umut took it home wrapped in his T-shirt. The resourceful villager expects to sell the unique shard for 4 million liras.
