Alanya City Council spoke for the protection of street animals

Alanya City Council made an important appeal at its meeting chaired by Nurhan Ozkan: "The new draft law assumes that street animals, especially dogs, will be put to sleep after a certain period of time. It s a norm that doesn t fit in. Under the Animal Protection Act and the Turkish Penal Code, all municipalities with a population of more than 25,000 must establish animal care centres. According to Law 7332, municipalities with a population of more than 75,000 are obliged to establish a shelter for homeless animals until December 31, 2022. However, as of 2023, only 237 of Turkey s 1390 municipalities have such centers. Therefore, we turn to the municipality of Alanya. It is necessary to accelerate as soon as possible the process of sterilization of street animals, as befits our city, which is a tourist center. We must eliminate this problem in order to preserve the reputation of an animal-friendly city"."We hope that this problem will be solved within 2-3 years by sterilization and rehabilitation of animals, not by killing them through sleep, but by regular vaccination by the Agriculture Directorates under the Ministry of Agriculture with a monitoring and sterilization system. When we reduce the population by sterilizing street animals, the problem will disappear by itself," Ozkan added.Protests against the proposed law will be held throughout Turkey. In Antalya, a large demonstration will be held at the statue of Attalos and the clock tower on Sunday, June 2 at 16:00. A free bus from Alanya will be organized for animal rights defenders. Citizens who wish to participate in the demonstration should contact +905072455805.
